camp, scouting
Actually the second Camp Manatoc on the Manatoc Scout Reservation. The original camp opened in 1923 near what is now the NW corner of Lake Litchfield. The camp was eventually moved to it's current area in 1932. The original Camp Manatoc was founded on a portion of land owned by a H. Karl Butler. Upon his death Karl Butler willed 414 acres of land to the Akron Area Council with the stipulation that a topnotch camp was built. The "new" Camp Manatoc was created on the southern portion of the property and included a newly formed Lake Marnoc and 5 new buildings (including the current Dining Hall and demolished Lake Marnoc Bath House).
Manatoc means "high outlook" which was more apparent before the growth of the trees on the camp property hindered the view of the valley.
