Lake Erie is one of the smallest of the five Great Lakes, ranking 4th or 5th depending on the means of measurement. It's bounded by the Canadian Province of Ontario, and by the US States of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan.
In decades past, Lake Erie was most well known for its extreme pollution. Industrial runoff became so severe that one of its tributaries, the Cuyahoga River, actually caught fire in 1969. Official embarrassment at this incident led to environmental legislation, including the Clean Water Act of 1972.
Pollution in Lake Erie has abated considerably in recent years, although it still faces challenges common to the Great Lakes system, such as invasive species.
