On Friday the 19th of January, 1917 at 6:52 pm a huge explosion ripped a large area of Silvertown from the face of the Earth. A soda manufacturing facility had been converted to produce TNT which was in great demand at the time because of WW1. Approximately 50 tons of the stuff exploded when it was ignited as the result of a fire. The blast was heard as far away as Norwich
