Pronounced 'Grennitch', Greenwich is the principal settlement in the London borough of Greenwich in southwest London.
Originally, Greenwich was the site of a royal palace where famous monarchs such as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were born. After the Civil War, a sailor's hospital was built here, which in 1873 became the Royal Navy College until 1998.
The Royal Observatory was also built here, and Greenwich has an important maritime history with Maritime Greenwich which is home to the Cutty Sark. It also plays a part in navigation: The Prime Meridian (0 degrees Longitude) runs through Greenwich, and this is where Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) comes from.
At the turn of the millennium, the Millennium Dome (now 02) was built to celebrate the Year 2000. The Millennium Village housing development was built to the south of it.
Greenwich occupies the area on the opposite side of the river to the Isle of Dogs, and a peninsula to the east.
