Canterbury, Kent, UK is famous for its Cathedral, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, The King's School Canterbury, and much more. It has Roman origins, and it is the canonical seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury (although of course his official residence is Lambeth Palace in London), who is the highest ranking cleric in the Church of England (the Head of the Church of course being The Queen). It is one of the few places in England to have a different name in French (Cantorbéry) and it translates into Welsh as Caergant.

The attached polygon delineates the urban area of the historic cathedral city of Canterbury which is the largest settlement within the much larger modern District of Canterbury, a constituent part of the County of Kent. The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by combining the historic cathedral city with the neighbouring urban districts of Herne Bay & Whitstable and the rural district of Bridge-Blean and the official designation of 'City' status was then transferred (by Royal Letters Patent) onto the newly formed District of Canterbury, officially therefore now the City District of Canterbury.

  • Canterbury TAILS, you say? Something's amiss there, lad...
  • May be "Canterbury Tales"? Tails sounds funny!!! ahhahaha!
  • This is a cathedral city, so the 'city' category should remain (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_status_in_the_United_Kingdom). The City of Canterbury is a government district which has been granted city status. Therefore, the marking of the district alternative (not marked yet as of 23/04/12) should have both 'city' and 'district' to distinguish it from this tag.
