Kent

United Kingdom / England / Lenham /
 county, draw only border

Kent is the south easternmost county in the UK and has always been a gateway to the continent: its name comes from "Cant" meaning gate. In the Roman era, it had three ports of Dover, Lympne and Richborough. Coastal erosion and silting meants that eventually only Chatham and Dover survived as ports but Chatham Dockyard has since closed. Today, Kent's status as a gateway continues with the Port of Dover and the Channel Tunnel.
Sometimes nicknamed the "Garden of England", Kent has a population of 1.6 million and has the 7th largest population and 10th largest area of English counties and the largest population for the administrative area. The county town is Maidstone, but for a long time Kent was pretty much two separate half's, with the eastern part belonging to Canterbury.
