  • Ely is located on an area of higher ground known as the 'Isle of Ely'. Before the drainage of the Fens, such locations were always the foci of settlement.
  • Could you tell more about this "Isle of Ely", please? And what are Fens (and why do they begin with a capital letter)?
  • Ely is also called 'Isle of Ely' because Ely is built on a 23-square-mile Kimmeridge Clay (a sedimentary deposit of fossiliferous marine clay which is of Jurassic age) island which, at 85 feet, is the highest land in the fens. The Fens, also known as the Fenland, is a naturally marshy region in eastern England. Most of the fens were drained several centuries ago, resulting in a flat, damp, low-lying agricultural region.
  • oh, that`s an interesting comment. Thank you.
