Waterbeach Barracks, originally RAF Waterbeach, is home to 39 Engineer Regiment which provides engineer support to both the Royal Air Force (RAF) and to United Kingdom Land Forces. One of only 2 regular Air Support regiments in the British Army it is particularly "construction centric" and has a considerable construction capability. Waterbeach is also home to 25 Engineer Regiment. Both are part of 12 (Air Support) Engineer Group.

The role of both 25 and 39 Engineer Regiment is the construction of runways and other
building and construction works worldwide on operations or specific tasks. Training in the use of this equipment is carried out on the training area.

In July 2011 the Ministry of Defence announced that Waterbeach Barracks will close. In November 2011 the Ministry of Defence announced that 39 Engineer Regiment would move to RAF Kinloss in the summer of 2012. HQ 12 (Air Support) Engineer Group will move from Waterbeach to RAF Wittering in the summer of 2013, enabling the closure of Waterbeach Barracks by December 2013.
