high-rise, apartment building, 1967_construction, housing cooperative
167-foot, 18-story mid-century modern cooperative-apartment building completed in 1967. Designed by Philip Birnbaum, it is clad in red brick. At the north end the ground floor is slightly recessed behind several white stone columns, with landscaping beds enclosed by low granite walls in front. The main entrance is centered on the north facade, with a glass door and sidelights below a flat, brown metal canopy extending out over the sidewalk. To the right is a parking garage entrance, and the ground floor is capped by a horizontal stone band.
The upper floors have triple-window end bays, and three double-window bays in the middle, grouped closer to the west end bay. Beginning at the 4th floor the end bays have projecting concrete balconies with metal railings, with slightly pointed ends.
On the east facade along the avenue, south of the north end's white stone columns, there is a triple-window and two double-windows, with vents below. After a blank expanse of brick wall (behind landscaping with a low brick wall and iron fencing), the south end has two bays of glass-and-metal storefront (with a metal cornice above). The upper floors have, from south to north, four bays of double-windows, two bays of triple-windows, three more double-windows, two more triple-windows, and two more double-window bays. Beginning at the 4th floor there are wider projecting balconies spanning the pairs of triple-windows.
The south facade on 34th Street has three more storefront bays, with the metal cornice continuing from around the corner. The upper floors have a single-window bay in the middle, with a double-window and triple-window to either side. Here as well the triple-windows have projecting balconies.
The building contains 187 apartments. The ground floor is occupied by a Santander Bank branch.
