Situated under the south mooring of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point was completed in 1863 by the Lincoln Administration. It protected ships laden with California 49ers gold as they passed between the mountains on their way to the ocean. This narrow pass was the only way that gold could be hauled out of California, hence its name the 'golden gate'. This state-of-the-art fortress "Fort Point" was one of three erected to protect the numerous shipments of gold from Confederate gunships.

It is obsolete and no longer used by the military, and you can visit 7 days a week. Free Admission.
