February 20, 1892, The University of Georgia and Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now known as Auburn University) meet here in Piedmont Park for the first time in the newfangled sport of football. Auburn wins the game by a score of 10-0. Since then, the teams have met in seven cities across Georgia and Alabama a total of 112 times through the 2008 season. The series has alternated exclusively in Auburn, AL and Athens, GA since 1959. Auburn leads the series 53-51-8. UGA has a narrow lead in total points scored 1,792-1,718.

The annual game is distinctively noted as "The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry." The annual matchup between the University of North Carolina and the University of Virginia is billed as "The South's Oldest Rivalry" (113 meetings) Given the current organization of the respective conferences (UGA & AU in SEC, UNC/UVA in the ACC) it is mathematically possible that someday the UGA/AU game will surpass the latter in number of meetings.
