This was a large, marble-paved courtyard which served as a vestibule for the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore.
Significantly modified and enlarged by the Romans. What you see today is largely their work, completed around mid- to late-2nd century, AD. Emperor Marcus Aurelius added himself to the tympanum above the first propylaia. See pix.
