Athens

Greece / Attiki / Athens /
city, municipality, draw only border, third-level administrative division, capital city of country

The Capital of Greece.
Was a very powerful city-state before the rise of Rome.

The patron goddess of ancient Athens was Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Athena's symbol was the owl, thus the ancient athenians depicted the owl on their minted coins of the ancient athenian drachma. The athenian drachma was a currency unit of universal importance, used 2500 - 2000 years ago all over the then known classical and hellenistic world.

In 2002 CE the greek government chose to resuscitate this ancient owl and the world's most powerfull currency, the euro, circulates around the globe, bearing the depiction of the owl on the greek national side of the 1 euro coin. Hence history seems to repeat itself after 2500 years.

  • Athens is an amazing city that mixes the ancient Greek culture with the modern affairs of any big city in the world. It is worth visting multiple times. If anyone were to say "been there, done that" about Athens it would show that person to be very shallow.
  • Athens makes me crazy! I go crazy when I'm there. I go crazy when I'm not there, waiting to go back. It can be frustrating, exhilarating, maddening, inspiring. I love it. I hate it. Mou aresei poli. Eimai Athenaios!
