This was the secondary gate into the sanctuary. Worn arcs in the marble flooring can still be seen, marking the passage of the huge doors over them over the years.

The remains date mostly from the Roman era, ca 50 AD.

  • The first photo shows the view past the propylaia up the sacred way. The second is a close up of the marble floor where the bronze gates would swing open. The third is a fragment from the propylaia itself, showing symbols of the ancient mysteries: the sheafs of grain, the blossoming flower, and a cylinder or jar representing the earth. Oh dear, now I've gone and given away some of the mysteries. I'm afraid I'm going to have to take away your internet privileges... :)
