Canal Road is built on the filled in part of a connector canal which fed the lower reservoirs in West Hartford from Reservoir #6 on Route 44. The canal also collected water running down the mountain and diverted it towards the reservoirs. Occasionally, the canal would overflow its banks and water would plunge into the lower neighborhoods. The canal was filled in to become Canal Rd., which seems to be publicly accessible at certain points. There are no houses with the address of Canal Rd. but, several houses to have entrances on car-accessible parts.
