The New York & New Haven main line originally followed this path east of the Woodmont station. In the 1890s, when the entire main line between New York and New Haven was being upgraded to four tracks, the present straight routing was constructed.

The railroad initially planned to put a major freight yard in the space between the new and old main lines, however, calculations showed that six or eight tracks would be needed between New Haven and here, and to further complicate things, every single freight train from or to the east would need to pass through the New Haven station. It was determined that this would cause too much traffic and noise, so the Cedar Hill yard was instead built at the location where the shore line, Springfield line, and Air Line converge just north of the New Haven station.

If the yard was built here, SS73 (Woodmont) would have controlled entry to the western end.
