Daniel Wadsworth owned about 250 acres of Avon/Talcott Mountain in the early 1800s. The Northern most point of his land was said to be 2 miles North of Albany Ave. Daniel built two towers on his property at different times; both towers being destroyed by wind or fire (Matthew Bartlett built both towers). The landscapes he created on his property were highly respected for their views over the Farmington River valley. Today, Montevideo Rd., runs along what used to be the driveway to his house which sat near Hoe Pond. The towers stood on the north side of Hoe Pond. Up until around May 2008, his original steel gates and wall were visible on Route 44, just West of the entrance to Montevideo Rd.. Due to DOT's widening of Route 44 from 500 feet East of the Route 10 intersection to the top of Avon/Talcott Mountain, the gates and wall have been destroyed and removed.

Most of the original Montevideo Estate is owned by Michael Konover who built all of the houses on Montevideo Rd. He is known to be more than willing to call the police on trespassers on his property.

  • Even though it's for safety of the drivers on the mountain, I still feel it's a shame the original gates and wall to the Montevideo Estate were taken down. On the South side of the road, Richard Ely's original stone wall and gate remain, although the road appears to border this wall now.
