This place is know as Garo in Gamo. It was a lowland territory of the Ganta where they grew cotton and other lowland crops. They also had their cattle camps here. The town was established by the late Dejazmatch Aemiro Selassie in the early 1950s following the establishment of a community Development Farm. It was one of the three parts of the town (others being Shecha and Sar Sefer). This part was named Sikela by emergency police force trainees from Salale (North Showa)who had their training camp in the area behind the current Teacher Training College. It is locally Known as Garo and the name is used as oath word. The place has sanctity for the Gamo. (Wolde Gossa Tadesse)
