Wonji, alternatively spelled as Wenji, is a town in Misraq
Shewa, Ethiopia. Beside its' sugar plantation ( Wonji
Sugar Plantation), the town owes its' fame to the Wonji
Sugar, known as Wonji Sekwar, a brand of sugar that
was locally produced, packaged in small plastic bags
with brand name Wonji Sekwar printed on the sides.
Literally, these little packages reached almost every
house in every corner of the country, and so did the
name Wonji. It has been a while since the small
packages ceased to exist, but their memory is still
alive.
