Ribeira dos Gatos

One of many ribeiras (creeks that only run water when it has rained a lot for some days) on the island. This one is part of Altares village. In the old days (before the 1980 earthquake) much of the now forested area was cultivated in little blocks called serrados, gardening vegetables, growing grapes and fruit trees. Now the cultivation is starting up again, but there is a gap of willing people to do the work as the old ones die and the new ones grow up on a diet of tv and video games...
