Praia da Vitoria is the main harbor for ocean going shipping for the island of Terceira. Its proximity to the US base characterizes the city. Together with Angra do Heroismo, this city is the second one on the island that could be called a county seat. Roughly half of the villages on the island are administratively grouped under Praia.
