Misterios - Lava beds originating from eruptions have locally been given the name of misterios (mysteries). They are spread all over the island. The Mistério da Prainha, between São Roque and Prainha, Mistério das Bandeiras, between Santa Luzia and Bandeiras, on the north coast and the Mistério de São João, on the south coast, are the most spectacular.
The Mistério da Prainha with 716,14 ha, is inserted into the São Roque - Piedade volcanic complex, stems from an historical eruption starting on September 21, 1562 and lasted for about two years.
In this field of pahoehoe lava, have developed various vegetal covers with a high concentration of endemic plants, “espigos-de-cedro” (Arceuthobium azoricum) and Azorean Heath (Daboecia azorica).
