2 White Street

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / White Street, 2
 Federal style (architecture), 1800s construction

Originally a 2.5-story brick and frame dwelling with a store, constructed in 1808-09 for Gideon Trucker who was an alderman and education commissioner. A one-story store extends an additional seventeen feet on West Broadway. The main house is clad in white brick, with a pair of peaked dormers breaking the roof line.

2 White Street was home to the African-American abolitionist Theodore S. Wright from 1842 until his death in 1847. Wright, along with Peter Williams Jr. and Samuel Cornish, was a leader of the anti-slavery and anti-colonization movements in New York City. He was first African-American graduate of the Princeton Theological Seminary, the second pastor of the First Colored Presbyterian Church, and was a founding member of American Anti-Slavery Society.

The ground level is the location of the diner where It Could Happen to You - a 1994 film starring Nicholas Cage and Bridget Fonda - was based. The story is based on a New York City, USA police officer (Cage) who wins the lottery and splits his winnings with a waitress (Fonda). The movie bears a striking resemblance to an actual event as documented by Snopes.

Currently, the ground level houses a liquor store which was later adaptively reused with the interior intact which operated as a J. Crew store from 2008-2019.

  • Are you sure that it wasn't on the west side of West Broadway? I walked by there several times when they were filming.
