The Sunrise Oil sands project will ultimately produce 200,000 barrels of bitumen per day using the steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process.

In 2008 Husky entered into a 50:50 joint venture agreement with BP for the production, refining and marketing of Sunrise bitumen. This agreement involves sharing the assets of Husky's Sunrise project and BP's refinery near Toledo Ohio. Husky will operate the Sunrise project, while BP will operate the refinery.

In November 2010, Husky and BP announced the go-ahead for construction of Sunrise. Phase 1 will cost $2.5 billion and will produce 60,000 barrels of bitumen per day when completed in early 2015.
