Streatham is located in the south of the London Borough of Lambeth. It grew up around the road to Sussex (now the A23). At one time a spa town, it was swallowed up by London's suburbia and became home to fairly wealthy middle-class residents. In the 1950s it had one of London's busiest shopping streets, and the first ever Waitrose.
However, outward movement to other places, closure of retail shops and a rise of traffic on the A23 led to its decline. These days the population is mixed: some middle-class residents on green streets to less well-off people and minority groups. Work is taking place to improve the High Road and make other environmental improvements.
Streatham has several areas: Streatham Hill, Streatham Common, Streatham Park and Streatham Vale.
