TDCJ (Texas Department of Criminal Justice) supermax prison opened in November 1993 (capacity of about 3000) as the Terrell Unit and converted to a death row facility in 1999 (it does not do executions) when Ellis Unit prisoners were moved here. It was renamed from the Terrell Unit in 2001 due to namesake Charles Terrell's request that he would not be associated with a death row facility (the current Terrell Unit was the Ramsey III Unit, renamed at the same time).
