The House with the Monkey (Veliko Tarnovo)

This is a masterpiece of master architect Kolyu Ficheto, made in 1849. It was inhabited by a rich merchant. It is built on a tight site, between two side streets and is characterized by a dynamic architectural facade: the second and third floors form a slight projection and each includes five windows, the three in the middle advancing in console.
While the access to the first level is of Stefan Stambolov St, the access to the other two levels is through the back Vastanicheska St.
The house took its name from the sitting monkey placed above the ground floor with an inscribed sign plate under it.
Restored in the '70s by the painter and architect Teofil Teofilov the house is now headquarters of the Union of Scientists of Bulgaria.
