Cape Sarichef Lighthouse

USA / Alaska / Akutan /
 lighthouse, navigation beacon - marine

Manned from 1904 until 1979 when it was automated by the Coast Guard, this was once the westernmost lighthouse in the United States.

The original keepers' quarters and support buildings, built in 1903, were located on the beach. The original lighthouse, which was built in 1903 but not lit until 1904, was located in the middle of the bluff. These buildings were razed by the Coast Guard in 1950 and replaced with concrete structures following the 1946 disaster at Scotch Cap when a tsunami destroyed the lighthouse located there and killed the crew. Today the small concrete 1950 lighthouse building and its 1979-built skeletal steel beacon tower replacement remain.
