Established and declared operational in June of 1985, the modern-day Cold Bay Long Range Radar Station is an active minimally attended Long Range Radar (LRR) site which functions as part of the Alaska NORAD Region and is under the jurisdiction of the 611th Air Support Group, Elmendorf AFB. Equipped with a single FPS-117 radar system, the site works in conjunction with the King Salmon Long Range Radar Site and Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site to provide early warning detection of inbound aircraft approaching over the Bering Sea.
