arena, wrestling, boxing stadium
Intimate (capacity 1,300) arena used for professional wrestling, boxing, and MMA with a colorful history. It was built in 1920 as a freight house. The tracks were pulled up in 1985 and it served as storage space for the South Philly Vikings mummers.
In 1993 Extreme Championship Wrestling moved in, and the "ECW Arena" became the home of hardcore wrestling, with promotions such as "Fans Bring the Weapons" matches; audience members bought items from the adjacent dollar store for wrestlers to use as weapons in the match. This lasted to 2002, when Xtreme Pro Wrestling signed an exclusive lease with the venue and renamed it "XPW Arena", forcing out other promoters. If anything the wrestling became even more hardcore; the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission banned a number of items, such as barbed wire and fluorescent light tubes, from professional wrestling matches as a result of incidents at XPW Arena.
XPW was evicted after less than a year for non-payment, and the arena went through a number of occupants, adding boxing and MMA. In 2013, the Trocadero Theatre signed an exclusive lease and planned to convert the building to a concert hall. The renovations were never completed, leaving the building empty to the bare walls.
Where some see problems, others see opportunities ... the building owners took advantage of the building's condition to refurbish it as a combat sport arena, adding a bar and convention space, and renaming it 2300 Arena.
