The University of Pennsylvania, also known as "Upenn" or simply "Penn," is the fourth-oldest educational institution in the United States. It was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1740.

An Ivy League school, it is seen as a leader in the arts, humanities, social sciences, communications, architecture, and education. Its law school, Wharton School of Business, and medical center and hospital are also world-renowned.

A staple of Philadelphia's "University City" neighborhood, the campus stretches from Chestnut Street (to the north) to University Avenue (in the south) and from 30th Street (to the east) to 44th Street (to the west). Many restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, vendors, and apartment complexes are within, or immediately adjacent to, the campus borders.
