The original timber structure was a class C viaduct across the tidal Forder Lake designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was 67 feet high ad 606 feet long on 16 trestles. It was demolished after the line was diverted to a more inland alignment using a stone replacement on 19 May 1908.
