  • there is a nursery rhyme: Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross to see a fine lady upon a white horse with rings on her fingers and bells on her toes she will have music where ever she goes. If I remember, there is a steep hill into Banbury and this would explain the term "cock horse" from the nursery rhyme. Maybe some one else can explain who is the fine lady?
  • The 'fine lady' is reputed to have been Lady Fiennes, whose ancestors today live at nearby Broughton Castle, 6 kms west of Banbury. No historical links have been found, but widely believed story.
