The building's base is clad in Rosa Purino Carnelian granite. Its structure is composed of three geometric arches, causing the building to appear like three towers standing side by side. The building has a lobby on the first four floors with retail space and public areas. There is an observation deck on the 73rd floor. The top two floors are occupied by the Columbia Tower Club. An underground concourse connects the building to the Seattle Municipal Tower and the Bank of America Fifth Avenue Plaza.
When the building was first built, it was originally named the Columbia Center. The name was later changed to the Columbia Seafirst Center and then to the Bank of America Tower. In November 2005, the building's name was changed back to the Columbia Center.
A number of companies and firms rent office space in the tower, including Bank of America, DLA Piper LLC, and Amazon.com.
The Columbia Center plays host to the largest firefighter competition in the world, in which 1,300 firefighters from around the world make the trek up 69 floors and 1,300 steps wearing full firefighter gear. This event benefits the local chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
