The Kaiser Center was designed by architect Welton Beckett as Henry J. Kaiser's 28-story world headquarters and personal residence. At the time it was completed in 1960, the building was believed to be the largest office building west of the Mississippi River. The building stands as a well regarded example of contemporary mid-century corporate architecture. The office tower features a distinctive, curved architectural design and a spacious roof garden tops the center's parking structure; its broad window sight lines offer spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay skyline, Lake Merritt and the Oakland hills.

The Swig Company bought the Kaiser Center in 2005 for about $200 million from Summit Commercial Properties. The building maintains a high occupancy rate with BART occupying about 300,000 square feet and the University of California Office of the President occupying 120,000 square feet.
