Constructed by Marshall Clark and his wife the children's book illustrator Virginia Keep Clark on 11 acres purchased from Mrs. John (Mary Smith) Underhill sometime between 1914 and 1920.
Purchased by Cecil Parker Stewart from Clarks c. 1942. Stewart died in 1945 and the property ultimately descended to his children. Stewart's daughter Jacqueline occupied the home with her husband Count Giovanni Guido Carlo Cardelli.
The house was purchased from the Cardellis by Dr. Carl J. Schmidlapp and his wife Barbara who with their family made their home here for over 50 years. Dr. Schmidlapp was Chief of Urology at Glen Cove, Huntington and Meadowbrook Hospitals until the middle 70's. Dr. Schmidlapp, a descendant of J.G.Schmidlapp (the Cincinnati financier, philanthropist and early civil rights proponent) was an heir to the Schmidlapp banking fortune. A world-class sportsman and yachtsman, Dr. Schmidlapp was an early proponent of land conservation with The Nature Conservancy.
