Site of Former Franklin Remington / Drayton Cochran Estate. Built on land purchased from Samuel Shaw in 1910. Shaw acquired the land from Jacob Smith prior to 1906. Remington and his wife, the former Maude Willet (nee Howard), built “Driftwood” a large elegant and restrained Georgian style mansion to a design by Ewing and Chappell on the 12 acre site in 1911.
Franklin Remington was a man of many talents. His great uncle Eliphalet Remington founded the E. Remington Arms company. Franklin went into partnership with Zalman Sholes and founded the Remington Sholes Typewriter company. He headed the Foundation Company, a major construction company specializing in large scale industrial foundations, and also pioneered the development of novel innovations in shipbuilding.
The home was later sold to the Smith Carpet heir, yachtsman Drayton Cochran.
"Driftwood" was razed in the 1980's, the property was sub-divided and a modern shingle style house was built on the site. In 2008 a new owner reconsolidated and added to two of the original lots, razed the 80’s shingle style house and constructed a large colonial revival style house and boathouse.
