There were two wells here, one on each side of the road. Both were hand dug. One was lined with wood and has since collapsed. This one is lined with rock and may still hold water. The wells were originally named Washington Wells and were renamed after James Hyten, who spent much time in this area working his Wander (or Wanderer) gold mine.
