The Hernando de Soto Bridge is a through arch bridge carrying Interstate 40 across the Mississippi River between West Memphis, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee. The bridge is in the Guinness Book of World Records as being "the largest free standing letter of the alphabet" in the world, due to the arches being shaped as the letter "M".

Counting the points where the bridge travels over land (the usual way of measuring bridge length), the bridge is 3.3 miles long. However, only about a third of it is over the water.

  • Carries I-40 across the mississippi river. Commonly referred to as "the new Bridge" despite the fact that I don't remember a time when it wasn't there. I do remember when they hung the lights on it (exterior lights for decoration only), it was a big deal though in hindsight I can't imagine why.
