City with a population of 200,145 at the 2000 census. Parish seat of the Caddo Parish. European settlement was made possible when an Army Corps of Engineers project headed by Captain Henry Miller Shreve head cleared The Great Raft, a massive log-jam that by the 1830s stretched 160 miles down the Red River. The Caddo Native Americans ceded American settlers land in 1835 and a town named Shreve Town was built here. The village of Shrevetown was incorporated as the town of Shreveport on March 20, 1839. The state capital was moved here in 1863 on the capture of Baton Rouge and Opelousas by Union forces. It was the last Confederate command to surrender to the Union. After the dissolution of the Confederacy, the capital was moved to New Orleans. In 1871 it was incorporated as a city. The arrest of Sam Cooke here in 1963 for attempting to reserve a "whites only" hotel room inspired the writing of the song "A Change is Gonna Come."
