The area was settled by various native groups before European exploration. In 1722 the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Benard de la Harpe passed through and named a stone outcropping on the Arkansas River "La Petite Roche" (the Little Rock). The outcropping became a landmark for travelers and the area was eventually known by that name. La Harpe built a trading post in the area that attracted settlement. The city was surveyed in 1820 and became capital of the Arkansas Territory in 1821.

It was formally incorporated in 1831, and remained capital when Arkansas became a state in 1836. The city was occupied by Union forces in 1863. During the Civil Rights Movement, federal troops enforced the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School in 1957 after the state's National Guard prevented their initial enrollment: A pivotal moment for the national movement. General Douglas MacArthur was born here in 1880.

  • I love my city and my state. We are by far one of the best states in the country. We have a great southern lifestyle, but we have modern cities that are growing and prospering. Downtown Little Rock is growing, we have great shopping, great parks, and on an hours drive can go to some awesome national parks, and even better lake for boating, rafting, swimming, and fishing. We offer a diverse economy, diverse population, and a bustling economy. Little Rock is the place to be, and i love Arkansas.
