City with a population of 153,701 in 2020. State capital of Mississippi and co-county seat of Hinds County with Raymond. Originally controlled by the Choctaw Nation, who were ejected from the area in 1830. Originally settled by a French Canadian trader and known as LeFleur's Bluff after him. Chosen in 1821 as the location for a permanent state capital of Mississippi, and named for Andrew Jackson in recognition of his victory in the Battle of New Orleans. Captured by Union forces in 1863 and burned to the ground. A major site of activity during the Civil Rights Movement. The Freedom Riders were arrested here in 1961, and dozens of protests and sit-ins were held here in the following years. Site of the shootings of protesting Jackson State students during the Vietnam War, in 1970, almost immediately after the Kent State shootings.
