Common to most Air Control & Warning type Air Force Stations, Ground-Air Transmit-Receive (GATR) stations were used to communicate with aircraft. They were later updated with high-power tactical digital data links to allow the vectoring of interceptor aircraft to their targets. This was the transmitter side of the Klamath AFS GATR.

  • This part of the GATR site was actually the transmitter site. All the site's radio transmitters were located here. The maintenance personnel also all worked out of this building. The receiver site was located opposite the transimtter site on the other site of the site. The separation weas necessary so the tranmsitter signals would not bleed over to the site's receivers and effectively block any outside received signals.
  • The datalink eqiment consisited of the AN/GKA-5 Digital data proceesing unit which got it's input from the AN/FSQ-7 Sage computer. After error checking, the information was sent to a low power modified AN-GRT-3 transmitter for low power retrasmission to aircraft, or it went to the AN/FRT-49 20KW High Power transitter for long range transmission to the aircraft the informaition was intended for. The data consisted of direcitonal and altitude infomration so the aircraft could be vectored ot a target location.
