USA / Texas / Central Gardens /
military, ship, cargo, United States Navy

Built in Italy for service as ro-ro cargo ships, these two sisterships were purchased by the United States in 1993 and given the names M/V Cape Vincent (AKR-9666) & MV Cape Victory (AKR-9701), forming their own class of Vehicle Cargo Ships.

Maintained as part of the Maritime Administration's Ready Reserve Force, the ships are two of the 31 Roll-on/Roll-off Reserve Force Ships which report for duty with the Military Sealift Command's Sealift Program Office when activated. Both ships have seen duty in both Gulf Wars and humanitarian efforts in Central America and after Hurricane Katrina, where they both brought in relief vehicles and cargo as well as serving as base stations for relief workers.
