Fort Cavazos is a United States military post located next to Killeen, Texas. The post was formerly named after Confederate General John Bell Hood, but was renamed Fort Cavazos in honor of Gen. Richard Edward Cavazos, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars who was born in Texas to Mexican-American parents. In 1982, he became the first Hispanic to wear four stars on his uniform.

Fort Cavazos is big and boasts of being the largest active duty armored post in the United States Armed Services. It covers 340 square miles.

  • As a army wife I'd say this place isn't all that bad. There's 2 museums to see here, obviously of military weaponry. With in a half hours drive you can reach Copperas Cove, Killeen and Harker Heights, that's 3 Walmarts, a Mall, and a major shopping center not to mention several mini shopping complexes all over the place. On post there are 2 PXs and 2 Commesaries. Lots to do and lots to see. The cost of living ranges from 700-1500 rent per month off post and on post all we pay for is the luxuries and the electric if you go over the alloted amount. Drive just under and hour to Temple or over an hour to Waco or head south at around and hour and 15 to Austin. Theres plenty of lakes around to go boating, fishing and camping too. There are lots of schools in the KISD system to choose from. None of the schools on post are DOD run. No talking on your cell phones around here though! Its a $75 ticket, you've been warned! lol and Drive safe if you come to visit because I don't want to be ran over! Lots of terrible drivers around here.
  • Site of Major Nidal Malik Hassan's murderous rampage killing in which 13 people were killed and 30 wounded. One of the worst domestic terrorist attacks in modern US history. (Removed from the description).
  • Stationed here in '90-'91....looks as though Killeen has grown by leaps and bounds since then. Probably still plenty of pawn shops, though.
  • Elvis went through basic here.
