About a year later, the community was re-named Corpus Christi, Latin for "Body of Christ." Corpus Christi was incorporated in 1852.

The Port of Corpus Christi was opened in 1926 and is currently the fifth largest port in the United States. Corpus Christi Naval Air Station was commissioned in 1941.
