This is a very old temple which was built by Maharaja of Sarguja. The presiding deity is Maa Mahamaya, an incarnation of Goddess Durga or Ambika, is the kuldevi of the local earstwhile royal family, after whose name the town is named Ambikapur. Mahamaya Temple is an ancient temple of 2nd and 3rd century, belonging to the Kalchuri era. The architecture of the temple is very simple but it is famous as an extremely revered shrine among the devotees. Samleshwari Temple is another important temple situated near of Mahamaya Temple which is dedicated to Goddess Samlai.
