Friends Seminary Addition (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / East 16th Street, 220

5-story modernist school building completed in 1964 as an addition to the adjoining Friends Seminary building to the east. Designed by Chapman, Evans & Delahanty, it is clad in orange brick, with brown brick on the ground floor. A shorter connecting section at the east end is clad in a glass-and-metal curtain wall, with a brown brick pier at its west edge. A sloped metal canopy covers most of the ground floor at the connecting section and also extends over to the right to cover the main entrance, with metal-and-glass double-doors. The rest of the ground floor has three bays of tall windows in groups of five, with shallower canopies over each bay.

The upper floors have four bays, each with two square double-windows. A narrow, vertical band of brown brick separates each bay. The top floor has taller windows, and there is a metal parapet screen above the roof line. The building houses a private K-12 school.
