Former site of the 1920s-era Signal Corps observation balloon hangar at historic Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It was demolished sometime after 1947. • Okay, well I don't think it is the actual balloon hanger. The hanger was nearby this building, but I think this building is the balloon hanger equipment building. It is an important building because it is the last remnant of an important part of the coastal defense story. Long distance spotting of the enemy, and the need for accurate range finding is a huge part of the pre-radar story at Sandy Hook. The balloon storage building is also very vulnerable to being torn down since few in the park know it's historic significance.
