Sandy Hook is a barrier peninsula, approximately 9.7 kilometers (between 6 and 7 miles) in length and 800 meters (0.5 miles) (varying between 0.10 and 1 miles) wide, in Middletown Township in Monmouth County, along the Atlantic Ocean coast of eastern New Jersey in the United States. The barrier spit encloses the southern entrance of Lower New York Bay south of New York City. The Dutch called the area "Sant Hoek", and the word "Hook" comes from the Dutch "Hoek" meaning "spit of land"

It is the former site of Fort Hancock, which was part of the coastal defense system of shore batteries as well as artillery test range by the US Army. The fort was established in 1859 and decommissioned in 1974. Today, the historic core and cantonment area is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The boundaries of the Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook Unit parkland, and this tag's polygon, closely match those of Fort Hancock's historic boundaries; however the fort reservation land also included what is now an active U.S. Coast Guard installation.
